Wind and Hail: What to Check

According to National Weather Service storm reports, hail up to golf-ball size (1.75 inches) fell late on the evening of March 23, 2016 at Park Boulevard and Preston Road and at Alma Drive and 15th Street. Stones of 1.5 inches landed near Park Boulevard and Los Rios Boulevard, and penny to half-dollar hail fell for about ten minutes near Spring Creek Parkway and Alma Drive.

On the late afternoon of April 11, 2016, according to National Weather Service storm reports, a trained spotter saw tennis-ball hail (2.5 inches) 2 miles north-northeast of Plano. Egg-size hail (2 inches) fell near Custer Road and State Highway 121 in north Plano, and golf-ball hail northwest of Independence Parkway and McDermott Road. The same storm went on to set the NWS Fort Worth record for the largest hailstone in its area.

Early on May 28, 2024, according to National Weather Service storm reports, a 2-foot-diameter tree and light poles came down at Legacy Drive and Independence Parkway, and fallen trees damaged two houses near Parker Road and Independence Parkway. A gust of 83 mph was measured just south of Plano.

Spring is the main hail season around Plano, with April the busiest month. None of this means your roof was hit.

What This Covers

Check from the ground, never from a ladder or the roof.

  • Dents on soft metal. Gutters, downspouts, vent caps and AC fins often show hail first.
  • Creased or missing shingles. Strong gusts break the seal and fold shingles back, most often along ridges, edges and corners.
  • A fresh ceiling stain. Water follows rafters, so the stain may show up some distance from where it gets in.

How Storm and Hail Roof Work Is Priced

Your insurer decides what a policy covers. These home-cost site rows (Plano and Class 4 from 2025, Texas asphalt from 2026) give scale while you read an estimate. None is our price or a bid.

Inspection, Estimate, Install

  1. Stay safe first. Keep off the roof and move belongings away from drips.
  2. Send us a request. Tell us what you saw, and we book a visit with a local roofing pro.
  3. The roofer documents the roof. The inspection is the roofer's: photos, measurements and a written estimate.
  4. Contact your insurer yourself. You open any claim, the insurer's adjuster looks at the damage, and the insurer decides coverage.
  5. Read the contract slowly. On an insurance-paid job of $1,000 or more, Texas requires a printed notice about the deductible in the contract.

What Your Insurer Will Ask For

Your insurance company decides your claim, not the roofer and not us. The roofer doing the work can't act as your adjuster or advertise to adjust claims; the roofer's part is photos and a written estimate. Insurers usually want dates and clear pictures, so take your own from the ground:

  • The date. Note when the storm came through.
  • Outside marks. Dented gutters, vent caps, the AC unit, fences and window screens.
  • Inside damage. Ceiling stains and anything the water touched.
  • Fallen limbs. The branch where it landed, before anyone moves it.

Reasons to Ask Here First

We keep storm talk calm, with no deadlines, and a request costs nothing. Roofers in Texas don't carry a state license, so check proof of liability insurance, an itemized contract and a local address. Plano requires roofing companies to register with the City before they pull a roof permit, so ask to see the permit.

Questions Worth Asking

Does hail always mean a new roof?

No. Small hail may dent gutters and leave shingles sound, while larger stones can crack shingles or strip granules. Ask the roofer for photos of anything found; what the policy pays is up to your insurer. A roof that was already near the end of its life is a separate question.

Can the roofer handle my insurance claim?

No. In Texas, a contractor doing the work can't act as your public adjuster. The roofer's job is the evidence and the estimate, and you deal with your insurer directly. If you want someone on your side, hire a public adjuster licensed by the Texas Department of Insurance.

A roofer offered to cover my deductible. Is that legal?

No. Under Texas law, the deductible is yours to pay. A roofer who offers to waive, rebate, absorb or credit it is breaking the law. You can report an offer like that to the Texas Attorney General's Consumer Protection Division, and policy questions can go to the Texas Department of Insurance.

My claim was denied. Can I cancel the roofing contract?

Not because of the denial. Texas has no cancel right tied to a claim decision. The general rule covers contracts signed at your door: Texas generally lets you cancel those until midnight of the third business day after signing. So read every page before you sign. Our Texas roofing rules page has more.
